Fort Belgica | Indonesia

Fort Belgica is one of the most impressive of the many forts built by the Dutch East India Company. The fort is located on Bandaneira Island, one of the Banda Islands. Construction of the fort started early 17th century.

The Banda Islands are a group of ten small volcanic islands in the Banda Sea, part of the Moluccas, also known as the Spice islands.

Cave 17, Ajanta | India

The Ajanta Caves are about 30 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 or 650 CE. Cave 17 contains some of the best preserved and well known paintings of all the caves.
 
UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983.

The stamp on the right is to commemorate the 150th anniversary of introduction of Sagol Kangjei to the world, the name of the game of polo played in Manipur. 

Sagol means pony or horse, kang means ball or round object, and jei is a stick used for hitting.

The Queen’s Stepwell at Patan | India

Rani ki Vav (the Queen's Stepwell) is located on the banks of the Saraswati River in Patan, India. The well was Initially built as a memorial in the 11th century. The site was only re-discovered in the 1950s as its many levels had been backfilled with silt over the centuries.

The well is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2014.

Canaima National Park in Venezuela

Canaima is a national park in south-eastern Venezuela along the border between Guyana and Brazil. The many cliffs and waterfalls, including the world's highest (1,000 m), form a spectacular landscape.

The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Medny Island | Russia

Medny Island is one of the two main islands in the Commander Islands. In 1970, all citizens of the island were moved to neighboring Bering Island. Today the island is totally uninhabited.

Bering Island | Russia

The Commander Islands are located in the Bering Sea, 175 kilometers to the east of Kamchatka. Bering Island is the largest and westernmost of the Commander Islands. The island is treeless, desolate and experiences severe weather, including high winds, persistent fog and earthquakes.

In 1741 Commander Vitus Bering, sailing for the Russian Navy, was shipwrecked and died on Bering Island, along with 28 of his men.

Trinity-St Sergius Monastery | Russia

The Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius is the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church. The monastery is situated in the town of Sergiyev Posad, about 90 km from Moscow.
 

The monastery was founded in 1345 by St. Sergius of Radonezh, a highly revered monk and the patron saint of Russia. The monastery started as a simple wooden church in an isolated area, but soon grew much larger.

The Suzdal Kremlin is the oldest part of the Russian city of Suzdal, dating from the 10th century. The building with the blue toppings is the Cathedral of the Nativity.

UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992, inscribed under the name White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal.

Garifuna music is a type of music found in Central America, primarily on the Caribbean coast of Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The Garifuna are descendants of West and Central African people. Drums play an important role in Garifuna music.

Mainau Island | Germany

Mainau is a small island in Lake Constance (Bodensee in German) in the most Southern part of Germany. The island is known for its parks and gardens and a 13th century baroque palace.
 
Stamp
Mainau is a German island but the card was actually sent from Switzerland. Normally I only like ‘sent from country of origin’ but this time the exception proves the rule.
